Tenia setanta-dos anys i, dacord amb la periodització proposada per Rosa Cabré, el recull forma part de la tercera etapa de la seva biografia (1907-1930) en què lautor abandonà el conreu de la novel·la i es va dedicar a la redacció de les "Memòries", a aplegar material narratiu divers, i a immergir- se en el gènere teatral amb textos propis i traduccions.
